German Earth Overload Day: Since the beginning of May we have been living on credit

On 05.05.2021, Germany will have consumed as many resources as are available to our country for the entire year. The Global Footprint Network calculates the Earth Overuse Day annually for individual countries and for the entire planet. From this day on, we use more arable and pasture land, fishing grounds and forests for the rest of the year than we have at our disposal. The aim of the day of action is to make people aware of the limited and finite nature of natural resources and the Earth.

In contrast to the worldwide Earth Overload Day in midsummer, the German Earth Overload Day is already in spring. The reasons given for this are:

  • the energy consumption, which continues to be far too high,
  • the rising CO2 emissions from transport and factory farming, and
  • the contamination of soils, air and groundwater.

If all of humanity lived as wastefully as the Germans do, we would need three Earths to cover our resource consumption. Moving the date (#MoveTheDate) of Overshoot Day is possible if we transform our infrastructures, make processes much more resource efficient, decarbonise energy systems, and sequester CO2.

For clarification, the following list of the earths required for individual countries and the entire planet.

The MuP Group is helping to minimise this resource consumption as part of "Engineering for a Better Tomorrow". Through M&P GO.BLUE.NOW, the limitation of global warming to 1.5° is pursued together with customers and partners.
