Once again, the accident figures of the BG Bau show a dramatic balance of occupational accidents. According to available figures, 69 construction workers had already suffered fatal accidents by September 2021. The main causes were falls from great heights and fatal injuries from falling parts. After there had already been 74 fatalities in 2020 and a total of 97 in the same period, the development in fatal accidents on the road is somewhat encouraging, at least so far. In 2020, there had been 13 accidents on the way to or from construction sites by September, while in 2021 there have so far been only 6 fatalities in accidents on the way to or from construction sites.
This year, statistically speaking, a construction worker was killed every four days. The development is worrying and does not bode well. The number of fatal accidents was alarming and threatened to reach the record high of the previous year, said IG Bau Federal Executive Board member Burckhardt. The number of notifiable accidents at work was also alarmingly high at 77,115. Construction sites continue to be a problem child when it comes to occupational safety. Time and cost pressure are often the main causes, especially in smaller companies. Despite the good and important work of BG Bau on occupational safety issues, Burckhardt said, a different awareness and even more prevention was needed.
The lack of staff at the state occupational health and safety authorities would also result in a clear monitoring deficit. More pressure is needed to monitor companies that do not take safety at work very seriously. "It is not enough to rely solely on personal responsibility," says Burckhardt.
The planning and monitoring of occupational health and safety on construction sites is therefore a top priority for the Mull Group. Not only for the protection of the Mull employees themselves but also for the protection of the construction workers, the necessary safety measures to minimise the specific hazards arising from construction activities are taken into account at an early stage in the planning and monitoring of construction measures. For example, within the scope of construction projects, the tasks of the safety and health coordinator according to the Construction Site Ordinance or the coordinator according to TRGS 524 for work in contaminated areas are taken on. But also the provision of external safety specialists for, for example, manufacturing companies are just a few examples of tasks of the Mull Group.
