"Deadly Inheritance"
Documentation by Frido Essen (Radio Bremen) with the assistance of Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH (Karsten Helms, Robert Brosy and Susanne Kokkelink).
In both World Wars, the German Reich, as well as many other states, produced and used a large number of chemical warfare agents. A large part of the munitions that fell into the hands of the Allies after the end of the Second World War were dumped in the North and Baltic Seas. The figure is about 1.6 million tonnes. However, some of the munitions and their contents (lost, tabun, phosgene, etc.) and precursors remain on land. Even today, filled shells, glass ampoules or other containers with the warfare agents can still be found in the former production and storage sites.
The largest deposit of explosive ordnance in Europe, if not in the world, can be found in the Lüneburg Heath. The so-called "Dethlinger Teich" contains thousands of grenades, which are now to be recovered with the utmost safety. Based on the pilot salvage operation, the cost is estimated at more than 50 million euros. Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH Hannover is involved in this project.
However, other sites in Germany and the surrounding states are still considered to be potential contaminated military sites today, and the condition of these contaminated sites is becoming increasingly critical as time goes by. In addition to endangering life and limb, the warfare agents and their degradation products have a toxic effect on the soil and groundwater. Often, the extent of the contamination is not even known, as the topic is considered politically unpopular.
Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH Hannover has been carrying out archival research, aerial photo evaluations, as well as hazard identification and remediation measures for abandoned military sites for 25 years. A great deal of information on wartime events and possible hazards will be accessible in the "Portal-H" (www.portal-h.com) from 15 August 2020. The experts at Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH will be happy to provide any further services.
