"Sunken Vessels" - Explosive Ordnance Search in the Danube between Serbia and Romania

At the end of the Second World War, the German "Black Sea Flotilla" tried to make its way up the Danube to safety with almost 180 ships. Due to fuel shortages and increased attacks from the air and from land, it was decided to sink all the ships. The shipwrecks are spread over a river length of more than 40 km.

Near Prahovo in south-eastern Serbia, 23 shipwrecks are located on an area of approx. 4 km² in the immediate vicinity of a barrage and important locks in European inland waterway traffic. Currently, investigations are being carried out on the condition of the wrecks as well as the ammunition still present in the project area. Subsequently, the salvage of the wrecks is to be prepared, whereby this is to serve as a pilot project for the salvage of further ships.

Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH Hannover is part of a Serbian-German-Austrian consortium with the partners Millennium Team (Serbia) and IC Consulenten (Austria), which won the international tender of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia. In this team, M&P is responsible for explosive ordnance detection and assessment.

The aim of the project, which is supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB), is to enable safety on European waterways and thus also to eliminate the currently difficult navigation in Serbian-Romanian waters. In addition, the measure is intended to support economic progress in terms of trade and tourism in Serbia, as well as to make a major contribution to environmental protection on the Danube.

"In addition to road, rail and air corridors, we are investing 380 million euros in shipping. Bringing out the lowered German fleet will help ensure that the Danube will be navigable all 365 days of the year, which is important for our economy and safe navigation," said Minister Mihajlović at the signing of the contract in September 2020.
