Rescue dog training on demolition sites
The use of rescue dogs is an essential part of civil protection when searching for missing persons in forest areas or as a result of earthquakes, mountains, avalanches and mudslides, civil explosion damage (gas explosions) and, last but not least, the effects of war. The particularly sensitive sense of smell of our four-legged helpers is used here: A trained area search dog can smell people at a distance of about 500 m even under unfavourable weather conditions; a debris dog is able to smell buried persons at depths of up to 5 m.
In order for the dog to be able to solve these tasks with a high success rate, a team training of dog and handler lasting up to 2 years must be completed, which must be followed by regular training sessions under conditions that are as realistic as possible. The basic training usually takes place on fixed sites, which are usually well known to the dogs and handlers and no longer have any unexpected distraction stimuli. For this reason, the search for realistic training opportunities with high demands due to difficult terrain, ambient noise, etc. is necessary and often poses a great challenge to the mostly volunteer rescue dog teams.
Especially complex, inner-city demolition projects with sometimes unmanageable spatial conditions on several above-ground and underground construction levels are highly interesting training areas for dogs and humans - if the demolition statics still allow it.
We support rescue dog teams by creating opportunities as planners/construction managers in coordination with building owners and demolition contractors to conduct training sessions on our construction sites and thus maintain the operational capabilities of these important rescue forces.
