Soil protection investigations on the site of the former brickworks

Since the middle of the 19th century, clay has been mined on the approx. 22 ha site of the former brickworks in Mühlacker and used for mechanical brick production. The site is now to be used for residential and commercial purposes.

The brickworks has a history of over 100 years with countless structural changes from the end of the 19th century. In earlier investigations, potential pollution hotspots were already mapped out.

MuP Umwelttechnik GmbH Heidelberg was commissioned to conduct in-depth waste and soil protection investigations on the site based on the previous investigations. The points of investigation are oriented towards the planned construction areas (clusters), taking into account the preliminary investigations. The excavations will be carried out by means of excavator trenches and small pile-driven boreholes. The depth of excavation depends on the fill thickness and is between 4 m and 7 m below ground level.

The aim is to obtain a final waste classification of the soils and to develop a soil management system based on the planned construction areas in order to compensate for the sometimes considerable differences in height on the site and to minimise the purchase of building materials for compensatory measures. PFC contamination was identified for individual areas during the previous investigations. These local contamination with per- and polyfluorinated chemicals are attributed to the use of various additives for brick production (such as deinking flotates from the paper industry). These areas are to be narrowed down in the investigations. Remediation measures will take place here in the course of the development.
