WHAT-WE-DO: After the exploration phase with the trial opening of the "Dethlinger Teich" was successfully completed in 2020, the actual planning for the complete remediation began in June 2021. The so-called "Dethlinger Teich" is the largest known contaminated site with chemical warfare agents in Europe. During and after the Second World War, explosives and chemical warfare agents were dumped in the former diatomaceous earth pit in quantities that are unique in Germany.

Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH (M&P) was commissioned in project consortium with Prof. Burmeier Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH (BIG) with the further project control, technical planning and construction management as well as the safety coordination.

The services include the tendering of a column-free salvage hall the size of two football pitches, the necessary infrastructure from roads to further hall structures, a groundwater purification plant as well as the actual planning of the redevelopment.

In the course of the planned remediation, the entire contents of the former diatomaceous earth quarry, which was backfilled with chemical warfare agents from World War II and construction debris until 1952, will be completely excavated and professionally disposed of. The overall measure is planned for a period of 5 years.

Risk management and emergency planning are also important service components of the tasks that the project consortium of M&P and BIG is tackling.
