Tempelhof Projekt GmbH has been responsible for the listed renovation, operation and development of Tempelhof Airport on behalf of the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing since 1 January 2011. Tempelhof Airport is Europe's largest architectural monument and has a unique historical setting that reflects important periods in Germany's history.
Das Gebäude, das von 1936 bis 1941 errichtet wurde, ist ein Beispiel für die Monumentalarchitektur des NS-Regimes, aber es ist auch ein Symbol der Ingenieurbaukunst. Es wurde 2011 von der Bundesingenieurkammer als „Historisches Wahrzeichen der Ingenieurbaukunst in Deutschland“ ausgezeichnet. The airport site covers about million square metres and has a gross floor area of about 300,000 m². It has great architectural-historical and urban planning significance and is considered one of the most spectacular buildings in Europe.
Since its closure in 2008, the listed building has been used as an event venue. It attracts people from all over the world who present innovative products and ideas, make music, organise congresses and more. In the coming years, Tempelhof Airport is to be developed into a place of experimentation and a new urban quarter for art, culture and the creative industries. It will offer space for working, trying things out and for unique events.
The proximity of Tempelhof Airport to Tempelhofer Feld, one of the largest inner-city green spaces, enhances its special character and charisma. The creative industries are showing great interest in locating in this area, and many companies and institutions are already based there. The development of Tempelhof Airport is intended to provide new impulses for Berlin as a creative location and to move it more into the social focus of the city. The goal is also to use the building as a bridge with a high quality of stay between the city and Tempelhofer Feld.
In preparation for the project "Technical Infrastructure 2030" (TI2030), Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH has been carrying out extensive inventories of lines and cables that are no longer in operation in the up to 7 km long media ducts at Tempelhof Airport since 2021. Existing pipes with potentially contaminated insulation materials were mapped out and their remediation planned in accordance with TRGS 519 and TRGS 521. Mull und Partner Ingenieursgesellschaft mbH is responsible for the construction management and site supervision of the dismantling of the media ducts, which has been ongoing since the summer of 2023 and is expected to continue until 2024, as well as the preparation of the technical control centres. Particular challenges are the limited availability of space, the cramped conditions in the work rooms, difficult access to the components, high room temperatures and the preservation of the entire building.
