Geothermal energy - an important building block for achieving the climate targets

The use of renewable energies plays a central role in the energy transition. The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) of the German Federal Government is one of the main control instruments when it comes to the expansion of renewable energies. The goal: by 2030, the share of renewable energies in electricity supply is to increase to at least 80%.

To achieve these goals, near-surface geothermal energy is increasingly being used to heat and temper residential and commercial buildings.

Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft mbH Braunschweig, with its headquarters in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, is setting a good example. For the new construction of its depot, it is planning a sustainable energy concept using geothermal energy. The concept envisages a bivalent system in which the base load coverage of the heat demand is to be covered by geothermal energy using a geothermal probe field and the peak load coverage by an air-water heat pump. In addition, active regeneration of the ground is planned by means of heat input from refrigeration machines. By matching the heat input quantities in cooling operation to the heat extraction quantities in heating operation, a more stable temperature level can be achieved in the underground and thus a more effective system operation can be guaranteed. On behalf of the Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft mbH Braunschweig, M&P ENERGY GmbH is planning the dimensioning and construction of the borehole heat exchanger system. The scope of services ranges from the execution of an orienting geothermal feasibility study to field investigations, such as the construction of an exploratory borehole incl. the development to a pilot borehole heat exchanger and the execution of a geothermal response test, up to the construction supervision and object support including previous planning phases in the design, the approval and the execution. In addition to the actual planning, we are also available to KVG in the upcoming award procedure. Incidentally, the pilot borehole heat exchanger for exploration purposes will be integrated into the subsequent borehole heat exchanger field so that the costs for the client are kept as low as possible.

The use of geothermal energy is a climate-friendly alternative to energy generation from fossil fuels and makes a significant contribution to mastering the energy transition. We as the project team of M&P ENERGY GmbH are proud to make a valuable contribution to a better future with our work.
