The public sector is planning to build on a plot of land that used to serve as the motor pool of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. For this purpose, approx. 800 m² of the building of the motor pool had to be demolished. The building was a listed building and could only be partially demolished after a special permit had been granted. The challenge here was that the building was connected to existing buildings on two sides and had to be separated from them. The existing buildings and the neighbouring buildings had to be protected during the deconstruction work in such a way that their stability was guaranteed at all times. Furthermore, the part of the building to be deconstructed contained a groundwater purification system that could neither be relocated nor taken out of operation. The groundwater purification system was therefore secured by means of an enclosure so that the building could be dismantled while the groundwater purification system was in operation and the system was protected against damage from the demolition work.

In addition to the partial deconstruction, an area of approx. 160 m² was completely gutted so that it could subsequently be redesigned.

In the course of the demolition work in the spring to summer of 2022, clinkers were salvaged from the façade in accordance with the requirements of the special permit for the protection of historical monuments so that they can be reused for a later new building. The deconstruction of the roof cladding of the building was carried out under the supervision of species protection experts, as the use of the building as a bat roost could not be ruled out with certainty. However, no bats were found during the deconstruction, so that the deconstruction could be continued without interruption.
