Bahnstadt Heidelberg: Demolition of the last US Army building

Engineering for a better tomorrow: MuP Umwelttechnik Heidelberg has been commissioned by the city of Heidelberg to demolish the last building of the former US Army shopping centre. The building was last used by a discounter as a sales outlet; some of the rooms had been empty for some time. MuP Umwelttechnik is supervising the work from the point of view of environmental protection, waste separation and compliance with occupational health and safety and emission protection, and is in charge of the site management.

First, a waste engineering survey was carried out to determine the structure of the building and the presence of hazardous materials. Based on the results, MuP drew up a list of services for the tender and evaluated the offers.

Last year, gutting work was started under the technical construction supervision of MuP. The various hazardous substances in the building posed a challenge.

During the separation of the asbestos-containing floor structures and wall plaster, bulkheads were created and a negative pressure area (black area) was set up. During the work, access was gained via a sluice system. The personnel used wore disposable suits and respirators during the chiselling and milling work. After the separation, the rooms were cleaned and room air checks were carried out.

The roofing felt containing asbestos was peeled off under a water mist and packed directly on the roof.

After the refurbishment, the building was inspected by MuP with the demolition contractor to check the success of the refurbishment and released for demolition, which is currently underway.

Parallel to the demolition work, the car park area was examined by a specialist company for possible unexploded ordnance or explosive ordnance from the Second World War. After the clearance, the car park pavement is currently being removed.
