Building pollutant investigation of the Pleidelsheim lock
The Heidelberg New Waterways Construction Authority is planning the basic repair and extension of the Pleidelsheim lock. The structure, which dates back to 1955 and has two lock chambers, is located in the Pleidelsheim side channel of the Neckar.
The extension of the left lock chamber is planned as part of the construction measures. In the process, the left lifting tower and the connecting footbridge are to be dismantled and, among other things, the two left lock gates are to be disposed of. In addition, minor reconstruction and renovation work cannot be ruled out in the further course.
In order to be able to guarantee compliance with all applicable regulations both in terms of occupational health and safety during construction work and during subsequent disposal, a detailed investigation of components suspected of being contaminated is to be carried out.
Based on the age of the building and knowledge gained from experience, potentially contaminated materials were first identified during a site visit. In the process, mainly paint coatings on walls, floors and metal components were identified as potentially contaminated with asbestos, PCBs and heavy metals. Occasionally, adhesives and joint compounds possibly containing asbestos and PAHs were also found.
In the further course, sampling and the compilation of a pollutant register are planned, on the basis of which recommendations for construction and advice for disposal are to be given.
A particular challenge is the sampling of the sluice gates, as these are in use, with the exception of one gate that is currently being removed for repair.
Special occupational health and safety precautions and safety measures are taken for this purpose.
