New law on the development of charging and line infrastructure for electric mobility in buildings is intended to contribute to the energy transition and promote the use of e-vehicles

On 4 March 2020, the Federal Cabinet approved the bill submitted by the Federal Ministry of Economics and the Federal Ministry of the Interior.draft on the development of a building-integrated charging and line infrastructure for electromobility (Building Electromobility Infrastructure Act - GEIG) was adopted. This transposed the EU Buildings Directive 2018/844 into national law.

As e-vehicles contribute to the decarbonisation of the transport sector, e-mobility is an important component of the energy transition.

However, the lack of sufficient charging infrastructure is a problem that the new law aims to solve in order to promote the use of e-vehicles in the near future and to advance electromobility.

In concrete terms, this means for builders and planners that in future all parking spaces in new buildings or extensive renovations of residential buildings with more than ten parking spaces must be provided with protective conduits for electric cables. For non-residential buildings, every fifth parking space must be provided. Furthermore, from 2025, every non-residential building with more than twenty parking spaces must be equipped with at least one charging point.

Exceptions to this are buildings that belong to small and medium-sized enterprises and are largely used by them.
