Welcome to the team... Fadi El Gareb!
We are pleased to welcome our new colleague Fadi El Gareb.
Mr El Gareb has been working at the Hamburg site for the Department of Soil / Contaminated Sites since 01.09.2022. He previously studied geosciences in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at the University of Hamburg.
Mr. El Gareb already worked as a research assistant for M&P in Hamburg during his studies between 2017 and 2019 and was able to gain extensive experience in the field of contaminated site and building pollutant investigations during this period.
Mr El Gareb wrote his Master's thesis at the Hereon Research Centre in Geesthacht. His work dealt with very tiny particles that could potentially pose a global problem for humans and the environment: Microplastic particles. Correctly determining this anthropogenic pollutant group is an enormous challenge for researchers due to the high error rate and time-consuming nature of previous methods. Using a new method for extracting microplastic particles from water samples and determining them, Mr El Gareb examined samples from the tropical Indian Ocean. The result: the pollution is clearly measurable and comparatively high. At the Hereon Institute for Coastal Environmental Chemistry, Mr El Gareb researched the occurrence, size and chemical composition of microplastics in the environment as well as the interactions between microplastics and other pollutants already present in the environment. As part of his thesis, Mr El Gareb developed a concept for the recently published online "Microplastic Compendium". The digital application is an information platform around the topic of plastic and microplastic pollution as well as their dangers, distribution and underlying scientific studies. The compendium, MPC for short, is designed for a broad readership. It is a dynamic, living platform that integrates current knowledge and responds to demands derived from it. Interested parties are cordially invited to visit the MPC at the linked page: www.microplastic-compendium.eu.
We are pleased that Mr. El Gareb has now decided to join M&P after completing his studies!
