Numerical modelling of PFA S with FEFLOW

By modelling processes taking place in the soil and groundwater, the conditions in a study area and the behaviour of pollutants can be better understood. Since the use of flow and transport models makes sense for various issues in the context of contaminated site management, numerical modelling is frequently used at Mull und Partner. Stella Eggelsmann used the interactive modelling system FEFLOW (©DHI) in her master's thesis.

At the modelled airport site, handling losses with fluorine-containing foam extinguishing agents have resulted in PFA S contamination. The contaminants have entered the unsaturated soil zone and have also been transported into the groundwater via rainwater seepage. A hydraulic shield was installed by Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH. This is intended to prevent the spread of contaminated groundwater into adjacent aquifer areas.

The challenges of the work were, besides the interaction of contaminations in the two media soil and groundwater, the size of the model (3,700 m x 1,250 m x 26 m) and the representation of an unconfined aquifer. As a result, it was possible - taking into account the different physicochemical substance properties of the various PFA S - to make predictions for the impact of remediation measures.

M&P continues to oversee the project. The findings of the modelling help in understanding the contaminant displacement and in assessing further remediation investigations at the site.
