The PFAS Challenge

PFAS

WHAT-WE-DO: Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH is developing a new soil remediation technique together with a group from research and industry.

Per- and polyfluorinated aliphatic substances (PFAS) contaminate the soil and groundwater in many places. These are industrial chemicals which, due to their properties, were used in the paper industry, in fire extinguishing foams or in outdoor textiles.

The substance group of PFAS comprises approx. 4,700 individual substances and is also ubiquitously detectable due to its persistent properties.

Especially in the area of soil contamination, there are still no remediation techniques available, so that contaminated land cannot be developed in some cases, or only if the contaminated soil is dumped in a cost-intensive way.

With the help of this new procedure, in cooperation with the ufz (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research) and the companies Geologik and Sensatec, both a cost-effective remediation method is to be established and the soil is to be preserved as an asset.
