Orienting investigation of suspected contamination areas (KVF) with suspected PFCs on a Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) property

The Osnabrück branch of Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH was commissioned with the investigation of a former base for flying units of the German Federal Armed Forces.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, a systematic survey of contaminated sites on Bundeswehr properties has been carried out. This contamination processing within the framework of the Bundeswehr's contaminated site programme includes the processing of contaminated sites, harmful soil changes and water contamination caused by them.

On many federal properties, including those used by the Bundeswehr, the group of perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) has come into focus.

Due to earlier and then legal use of fire extinguishing foams containing PFCs by civilian and military fire brigades, corresponding contamination of the subsoil cannot be ruled out, especially on properties used or pre-used by the military with their own fire brigades (e.g. airfields and training areas). A suspicion of contamination already exists if the use of the property indicates that substances containing PFCs have been stored or used. This does not mean that there is an indication of direct contamination of soil or groundwater for every suspected site.

Under the direction of our colleague Patrick Lüke, an extensive investigation of a property and the various KVFs was carried out within two weeks. The scope of the investigation was about 90 small pile driving boreholes (approx. 360 drilling metres), the expansion of the boreholes to temporary soil gas measuring points as well as the creation and sampling of groundwater measuring points.
