M&P Osnabrück: There's a bike in the corridor!

InDesign Post quadrat Template 17

There are many reasons to cycle to work. In addition to one's own health and the financial aspect, nowadays environmental protection is clearly also in the foreground.

From the Data report of the Federal Statistical Office from 2021, it can be seen that bicycle use has been steadily increasing in recent years, especially in cities. While the share of bicycle commuters was still 12 % for a distance of 2-5 kilometres in 2002, it is already 20 % 15 years later. For a distance of 5-10 kilometres, the value has even doubled in these 15 years from 6 to 12%.

We at Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft in particular not only want to take up the cause of environmental protection, we also want to live it. It is therefore great that many of our employees here in Osnabrück already regularly use bicycles to get to work. A large part of our team has a commute of less than 10 km and thus falls under the data recorded by the Federal Statistical Office. In comparison, the share of bicycle commuters at the Osnabrück location is 67%, which is far above the values for Germany as a whole. Even the remaining 33% of the "10 km group" use the bicycle at least occasionally.

But there are indeed colleagues who now and then cycle more than 30 km to work. This is no problem for us, as we have a shower in our offices, which is not only very beneficial after an off-road ride amidst dust and dirt, but also when the commute has been used as an exercise session.

The excuses for not using the bike are of course reduced enormously.

This year, for the first time, the Osnabrück site is taking part in a BICYCLE TO WORK campaign and is now collecting days and kilometres between May and August. We will know in September whether this is an incentive for "infrequent riders" to get on their bikes more often, how many days the teams will collect during this time and whether they will even make a profit. We will report!

In any case, every kilometre cycled is a gain for healthy employees and a healthier environment.
