Closing the gap between the Wuppertal HBF / Mettmann Stadtwald railway line: A region grows together
From 2014 to 2020, Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH in Hagen accompanied the comprehensive expansion of the Kaarst-Mettmann railway line in NRW on behalf of Regiobahn GmbH. The extension was carried out in an easterly direction.
The entire section of the railway line now runs from Mettmann-Stadtwald to Wuppertal-Vohwinkel. A single-track route already existed in part of the section, which had previously only been used for freight traffic and was upgraded to double-track as part of the project and also opened up for passenger traffic. From Dornap-Hahnenfurth, the railway track was re-routed. In the process, the limestone pit in Wuppertal-Hahnenfurth was bypassed to the north.
The new route now has a total length of approx. 1.7 km. The route runs along the B7.
Based on the complex new planning, the excavation of approx. 110,000 m³ of geogenic soil material took place within the scope of the construction project, which was relocated or deposited on the adjacent Hahnenfurth waste rock pile. This led to an increase in the height of the dump by up to 20 m.
In the course of the earthworks, the Hahnenfurth slag heap was remodelled. In consultation with the various authorities of the city of Wuppertal, several biotopes, a new rainwater retention basin and a new and, in terms of size, unusual, near-natural drainage system were planned by our office and implemented by the construction company.
The planning and expert supervision of the earthworks on the dump as well as within the railway line, the planning of the drainage facilities as well as the quality assurance of the work carried out on the dump were carried out by our staff.
After the acceptance of the new line by the state railway administration, the starting signal for the first train journey could be given in December 2020.
Project manager Fabio emphasises the relevance of teamwork in such large and unusual projects: Andreas, Thomas, Nadine H. and Daniela: THANK YOU!
