Construction of the new rainwater treatment plant at Düsseldorf Airport
The expansion of the apron areas of Düsseldorf Airport requires, among other things, a new rainwater treatment plant, which is to be built on the north-western edge of the flight operations area. Due to the total area of the construction project of approx. 14,000 m² and the depth of the rainwater clarification and retention basins, extensive earthworks are required. After completion, the three basins can retain more than 13,000 m³ of rainwater that accumulates on the sealed apron areas.
In the preceding planning phase, numerous boreholes were drilled on the site by the staff of Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, Düsseldorf, and the sample material obtained was chemically analysed with regard to the recycling of the excavated material. The classification of the excavated material, possible recycling routes and the expected quantities are part of the excavation and recycling concept prepared.
In addition, the excavation and backfilling works are continuously accompanied by M&P in terms of geotechnical and technical expertise. On the one hand, this concerns the review of the implementation of the excavation and utilisation concept, the preparation of water right applications as well as the classification of the excavated material in the construction process and, on the other hand, the review and documentation of the proper compaction of the introduced soil material in the working areas and open spaces after the construction of the structures as well as the answering of geotechnical questions during the construction phase.
The earthworks on the stormwater treatment plant were started in mid-2019. It is expected that this work can be completed in 2021.
