BG Bau: Skin cancer most common occupational disease in construction in 2020

Many employees are pleased that working outdoors becomes more pleasant again with the arrival of spring. But too much sun can have short- and long-term negative effects on the skin and eyes because of UV radiation.

Current figures on occupational diseases at BG Bau show that white skin cancer caused by natural UV radiation accounts for more than 2,700 cases, or about 18 % of all reports. Often, the damage only appears after 20 to 30 years, although a one-hour UV exposure on 50 days of intensive sunshine per year is enough for this.

Workers in building construction, civil engineering and road construction as well as roofers and carpenters are particularly affected. From April to September between 11 am and 4 pm, UV exposure in Germany is so high that additional protective measures are required.

The determination of the necessary protective measures is based on a risk assessment, whereby the measures are to be graduated according to the TOP principle from technical to organisational to personal measures. In addition to sun sails or sunshades, adapted working hours, body-covering clothing and sunscreens are possible.
