M&P Osnabrück: Innovative redevelopment of a former metal processing plant

InDesign Post square Template 5

Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft Osnabrück is carrying out a comprehensive refurbishment.

On the premises of a former metal processing company, the handling of degreasing solvents led to contamination of the groundwater with volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (mono-contamination with CFCs). In addition, production sludge residues were deposited on the property, which led to contamination of the soil and groundwater with CFCs, alkylated benzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mineral hydrocarbons (MHCs) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) (multi-pollution). From both sources of contamination, plumes of CFCs formed in the groundwater, which merge in the downstream and move towards a drinking water protection area.

After extensive remediation investigations and the preparation of a remediation plan, the remediation execution is now underway. The collection of the pollutant plumes in the downstream is carried out using the classic pump-and-treat method. The pumped water is cleaned via activated carbon units with an upstream multi-layer gravel filter and discharged into the nearby receiving water.

The contaminated sites on the former factory premises are remediated by excavation in the unsaturated soil zone and by using innovative remediation methods. In the in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) process, which is used in the multi-pollutant site, an oxidant is used to degrade the pollutant. The ENA biological method is used to remediate the mono-pollutant damage by microbial anaerobic dechlorination. In both processes, hydraulically supported circulation flow cells are built up by injecting the active substances into the groundwater and removing them to increase the effect in the groundwater. By using the innovative remediation methods, the remediation time is drastically reduced from several years to decades to several months to a few years.

The well construction, pipeline construction and installation of the groundwater purification system for the remediation of the combined plume of pollutants have already started in April.
